Jem Bowden:
Our landscape and the medium of watercolour together are forever occupying my mind. Inspired by the former and challenged by the latter, this is a consuming vocation which I expect to last my lifetime.
The great watercolourists have shown that this medium is all I could need. In theory it can be simple, but watercolour has its own ideas and in practice can be very difficult.
Thankfully the result is hugely rewarding when the artist and medium come together in harmony for the subject. With constant practice one can progress, but a successful watercolour can still feel like a happy coincidence.
Here are some examples of my work produced on location in the landscape. These are completed in front of the subject and never added to or modified back in the studio.
It is an exhilarating process, and this is my preferred way of working. The elements tend to demand fast painting, and a bold, intuitive approach. My aim is to capture a scene as straightforwardl
Almost all of my paintings are on half-imperial size paper, being approx 12.5 x 19.5” image size (31 x 51cm). Paintings are for sale unless otherwise stated. General information on purchases is under the Shop tab, but please contact me if you have any enquiry.
