HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- A good Samaritan and an animal rescue group joined forces to lend a helping hand to a homeless man and his dog after area shelters would not take them in together.

Hranto Davoyen was struck by the devotion 62-year-old Ronald Aaron showed to Shadow, his 12-year-old dog, when he spotted them near Hallandale Beach Boulevard Wednesday morning. "I see the love between each other," he said.

Davoyen said Aaron was feeding his dog when he first saw them. "At a 7-Eleven, he was sharing his last piece of bread with the dog," said the good Samaritan.

Aaron said he had lost his marriage and his job as a hotel manager a few years ago. "Because of my lapse in the business, no one's going to hire me now, and here I am today," he said.

For the past few days, Aaron and Shadow had been living under a bridge. Aaron said he had adopted Shadow as a puppy almost 13 years ago, and he said he's unable to go to a shelter because none of them will take dogs.

When asked whether Shadow, a female, is his best friend, Aaron said, "Yes ... I love her."

"I was told, with the people I spoke to today, they said, 'He can surrender his pets to Animal Control,' but I said, 'He's not going to do it,'" said Davoyen.

Davoyen brought Aaron and Shadow a cart full of food and supplies, and he sought help from the rescue group A Way for a Stray. At one point, managers from a nearby big box store demanded proof that the items in the cart had been paid for. "I didn't steal anything," Aaron told one of the managers, and a receipt was produced.

A Way for a Stray secured a hotel room for Aaron and Shadow, who is the owner of a new dog bed. By dusk, Wednesday, the inseparable companions headed off to their hotel, which provided a roof over their heads, at least for one night.
