Lecture: The Importance of the 1966 Historic Preservation Act of the Future

Speaker: Arva Moore Parks, Historian, Activist, Curator and Author

This lecture will include a review of the effect the Preservation Act had on historic preservation in America and locally, stressing the National Register, Federal Advisory Council, and state and local ordinances and preservation efforts that it helped spur. About the speaker: Arva Moore Parks—a native Miamian, historian, preservationist, and community leader has authored, coauthored, edited, or contributed to more than thirty books and documentaries, including the City of Miami’s official history: Miami The Magic City. In 1973, she was directly involved in saving the Barnacle in Coconut Grove now a State of Florida Historic Park. During her six-year tenure as chair of the Coral Gables Preservation Board, she helped preserved some of the city’s most important landmarks and established relationships with members of the Merrick family. She recently spent eighteen months as pro-bono acting director and chief curator of the new Coral Gables Museum and two years as chair of the board. Her latest book is George Merrick: Son of the Southwind. She has been widely honored for her work in both writing and historic preservation. Art Deco + MiMo Appreciation Course + Tour Guide Academy

Miami Design Preservation League offers the Art Deco + MiMo Tour Guide Academy, a course designed for individuals who would like to learn more about Art Deco and Miami Modern architecture, also known as “MiMo”. The Art Deco + MiMo Tour Guide Academy also serves as a training program for individuals who would like to become volunteer guides for MDPL, leading walking tours of the Art Deco District and the newly recognized MiMo district of North Beach. Individuals not interested in becoming MDPL tour guides will register for the one-day appreciation course. Individuals interested in becoming certified MDPL tour guide will participate in the full three-day course.
